A key component of drug abuse treatment is teaching the addict there is a fundamental biological element that enables them to remain sober. Many try to stay sober without a drug abuse treatment program but fail due to work stress, family problems, psychiatric problems, pain from medical issues, and both social and environmental cues. These are what trigger cravings without the person even being aware it is happening. It can be very subtle; one cue building on top of the other until a relapse occurs.
But, there is help. Participation in a treatment program can help even those who are most severely addicted.
