5 Things Not to Say to a Sober Person

We all know that ‘foot in the mouth’ guy. That person that always seems to know exactly the wrong thing to say at the wrong time. If you’re worried that you might be that person, here’s a quick guide to keeping your cool! Stay away from saying any of these lines to your friends in recovery and you’ll be better off!

One won’t kill you

That’s the thing that “normies” don’t understand. One drink or hit or line could actually be the beginning of the end for a person in recovery. The saying, “one is too many and one thousand is not enough,” is funny, but sadly, true. Once that phenomenon of craving kicks in, all bets are off.

It’s only weed, what’s the big deal?

Oh what a slippery slope a little toke can be! The whole debate about the legalization of marijuana doesn’t really apply when it comes to addiction. Hey, booze is legal too, and a sober person can’t have that. Just because it’s grown from the earth doesn’t mean an addict or alcoholic won’t abuse it!

You just need a little will power

Holy smokes! That’s the solution millions of addicts and alcoholics around the world had somehow not realized until this very moment in time. Of course that’s the problem! Just a little lack of discipline. Wow. That whole concept that addiction is a disease of the body, mind, and soul goes right out the door with this new take on things. Thanks!

You don’t need to quit, you just need to practice moderation

People who drink or enjoy “recreational activities” in moderation can never understand why drunks and drug addicts don’t just party like “normal” people. That’s the problem. Alcoholics and addicts have no ability to regulate their substance intake. Nor do they have the ability to control what will happen when they do take a drink or a drug. It may end in a mellow evening, or it may end in a jail cell. Moderation is not an option.

But you’ve been sober a while, it’s okay if you drink now, right?

Wrong! The fact of this disease is that is a lifelong, progressive illness. Addicts and alcoholics are never “cured.” They have a daily reprieve contingent on their program of recovery. They can live full, happy, joyous lives. But true addicts and alcoholics can never drink or use drugs normally again. People who don’t have this disease find that hard to understand. Trust the sober person in your life. It’s true.

If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, there’s no need to struggle alone. Seek help and the opportunity to live a happy, sober life free from addiction. The Pat Moore Foundation is available 24 hours a day.
