National Treatment Improvement Evaluation Study: Changes in Sexual Behavior

Changes in Sexual Behavior

The sexual behavior of persons who abuse substances is one of the major pathways for the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Treatment has a significant effect on reducing high-risk sexual behaviors.

Table 5 shows that:

  • The percentage of persons who had sex for money or drugs dropped by 56 percent;
  • The number of people who had sex with an IV drug user was reduced by 51 percent;
  • Those who reported having vaginal heterosexual sex with more than one partner and not always using a condom, decreased by 35 percent;
  • Although the base was small – 1.4 percent – the number who reported homosexual sex with more than one partner and who did not always use a condom declined by 57 percent.
