Buprenorphine, Buprenorphine Treatment & Buprenorphine Detox

In 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the an opiate addiction treatment medication called buprenorphine. The brand name for buprenorphine is Subutex and it, along with another buprenorphine based product, Suboxone, is the only schedule III or V medication to have received the FDA approval for this specific use. The purpose of this medication is it help alleviate withdrawal from opioid drugs, which are painkillers like, morphine and other codeine based drugs and medications (OxyContin, Vicodin, crystal methamphetamine).

Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist, which means that since it is an opioid it can produce typical opioid agonist effects and side effects such as euphoria and respiratory depression. But, the maximum effects are less than that of full agonists like heroin and methadone. At low doses buprenorphine produces sufficient agonist effects to enable an individual with an opiate addiction to discontinue the misuse of opioids without experiencing withdrawal symptoms.
