Understanding what a drug detox, or a drug detoxification is can help alleviate any fears of what to expect seeking help for a drug addiction. A drug detox is the process by which the body rids itself of a drug while managing, medically or otherwise, any withdrawal symptoms. Most often a drug detoxification is the first part of a treatment program, and should always be followed by behavioral therapy and/or medication if available or necessary.
The length of a detoxification varies with the type of drug used, and the physical withdrawal could last for days, but the emotional part, which includes depression could last for weeks. It’s important to note that treating withdrawal is not the same as treating the addiction.
