Drug Addiction Treatment | The Cost
Is drug addiction treatment worth the effort? Do the financial costs pay off? Or is it just another way to spend taxpayer money? These are some good questions regarding the financial and societal costs to drug addiction treatment.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse tallied some numbers and I think the answer is pretty clear.
- Overall costs of Substance Abuse on our Nation annually: $1.5 trillion
- Substance Abuse Treatment: 1 Year of methadone maintenance treatment: $4,700
- Imprisonment of Substance Abuser: 1 full year is approximately $24,000
- Conservative Estimates: For every $1 invested in addiction treatment programs yields a return between $4-$7 in reduced crime, criminal justice costs, and theft.
- Health Care: when this factor is included in that $1 investment, the savings will increase to $12, and
- Community Effect: increase in workplace productivity and less drug-related accidents, which include overdoses and deaths.
