Drug Abuse Treatment that Fits You Best | Part 2

In the first part of this three part drug abuse treatment series, we talked about being a 'high bottom' addict. This group generally maintains their existence and can seem to operate and function in their relationships, work, and their health tends to be okay as well. They find help on their own and either get treatment through inpatient or outpatient basis. The second group mentioned in last week's post (8/10/10) is getting help through an intervention.

What is an intervention? An intervention is about forming a set of supports, connecting and focusing on the hope of changing the life of the addict who is on a destructive path because of their usage. Typically, the addict might not be able to hold a job for any significant length of time, has destroyed trust of family and friends, some going so far as stealing from them to support their addiction, and their health is most often deteriorating.

This intervention support group consists of members who can no longer just sit back and watch the addict's health and welfare decline. This group gets together and plans what needs to be done and makes the decision to intervene. However, they shouldn't do this alone. They should bring in a professional from a drug abuse treatment facility.

An intervention can be a tender, realistic and relaxed dialogue between family, friends and the person with the addiction. There are times it might seem to be confrontational, but the process can be rewarding for all involved, especially if the addict seeks the help being offered.
